Family Support
The term “family” can mean many things: a spouse, a parent, a relative, a significant other, or a friend. However they are defined, the families of wounded, ill, and injured Sailors and Coast Guardsmen are critically important. Without their selfless dedication, Navy Wounded Warrior enrollees would not likely be so successful in their recovery, rehabilitation, and reintegration activities.
Navy Wounded Warrior provides enrollee families with a variety of support services to help make their jobs as caregivers more manageable and alleviate the stress that accompanies a major life change.
Support for the Entire Family
When Navy Wounded Warrior receives word that a recovering service member is inbound, its team of experts takes immediate action, addressing issues — both large and small — families experience when a loved one becomes seriously wounded, ill, or injured. They first tackle the family’s most pressing needs, including Invitational Travel Orders, installation access, lodging, and child care. Whenever possible, they ensure those needs are met before the service member arrives at a medical treatment facility.
When working with a service member to develop a Recovery Care Plan, Navy Wounded Warrior makes certain their family and caregiver are included. Critical family needs – such as loss of income, benefits, and emotional well-being – are focal points of the plan and are tracked throughout the recovery process.
Over time, Navy Wounded Warrior communicates frequently with families, ensuring their quality of life does not suffer while providing care for a loved one. As needed, families are connected with services such as personal financial management, spouse employment assistance, respite care information, and child and youth programs.
Assistance for Families
Navy Child and Youth Programs (CYP) offer wounded warriors enrolled in Navy Wounded Warrior the opportunity to be charged only Category 1 parent fees while they are in treatment, regardless of total family income. As per OPNAV 1700.9E, Navy Priority Placement Childcare, all Navy-operated and subsidized childcare programs shall give the highest priority to all wounded warriors, fallen warriors, Individual Augmentees, and ombudsmen (performing official duties). This includes full-time, part-time, and hourly care. In addition to child development centers, child development homes, and school-age care, child and youth services offered include youth and teen programs (sports, leisure classes, internet labs), school transition support, special education system navigation, home-school support, and post-secondary preparation.
Navy Wounded Warrior families also benefit from the partnership Navy CYP has with the National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (NACCRRA), which provides accessible, affordable, and quality child care where Navy programs are not operated. It is a national network of more than 850 resources and referral agencies located in every state and most communities across the country. The NACCRRA is particularly helpful for Navy Wounded Warrior families who are not near a Navy child development home, specifically, Reservist wounded warriors and those receiving care at a VA Polytrauma Center.
Regional non-medical care management teams and the Family Programs and Charitable Resource coordinator can assist in finding suitable care for enrollee families, whether through a Navy program or the NACCRRA.
