SCAADL

Special Compensation for Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (SCAADL)

SCAADL benefits are provided monthly to permanently and catastrophically injured or ill Sailors to offset the loss of income of their caregiver. This benefit is not automatically paid to a wounded warrior. They must contact the Navy Wounded Warrior to initiate the application process.

To meet basic eligibility a member must:
•    Have a catastrophic injury or illness incurred in the line of duty that compromises their ability to carry out activities of daily living such that he/she requires personal or mechanical assistance to leave the home or bed and/or requires constant supervision to avoid physical harm to self or others;
•    Be certified by a licensed DoD or VA physician to need assistance from another person to perform the personal functions of everyday living; and
•    Be in an outpatient treatment status and the absence of caregiver assistance would require some form of residential institutional care.

SCAADL benefits require re-certification every 6 months and can continue until a wounded warrior separates from the Navy, or they no longer meet the eligibility requirements. If a wounded warrior is transitioning out of the Navy, before separating they should notify the VA and begin the application process for VA’s caregiver stipend.

* BUPERS/NPC liaison support is not available to Coast Guardsmen.
