Builder Courtney Russ is a construction facilitator at Naval Construction Group One at Port Hueneme in Naval Base Ventura County, Calif. Though she is faced with the challenges of her physical limitations, she continues on as the Division Lead Petty Officer. Her passion for her work and support of her fellow sailors won't let her put down the torch.

In February 2021, Russ underwent a life-changing surgery. Her recovery process has taken a toll on her physically, mentally, and emotionally.

"I recognized that things were not as they used to be, and for that reason I sought help," she said. "I was introduced to Navy Wounded Warrior, where I have received numerous resources and support to cope with this new chapter of my life."

In her spare time, Russ enjoys playing piano and taking on DIY projects at home. Word around base is that she is sailors' favorite barber, as she is skilled at giving a clean fade to her shipmates to keep them in grooming standards. She also volunteers at Barbara Webster Elementary School in Santa Paula, Calif., where she is Benita the Bobcat. She adds a lot of life to the parades, pep rallies, and back-to-school nights.

Russ joined Navy Wounded Warrior in mid-2024. She continues working through her recovery and has found guidance from her care team.

"I am yet to fully recovery, but with the guidance of this program, I know that I am not alone in my journey. I am forever grateful for the opportunity that not many take advantage of."
